Default Why Are Primary Rangers So Popular?

I remember there being a poll on VN, asking what people's primary would most likely be for their main.

%40ish replied ranger
then it went
Warrior
Necro
Elementalist
Monk
Mesmer

So why are they so popular?
Expertise is the best primary atm, but not alot of people know that, and of those who do I don't think would influence the numbers too much.

Personally I thought Warriors would've been the most popular, followed by Elementalists.

Cause rangers are obviously the coolest. They get vicious animals to attack people, they fire bows and hardly ever miss, they can dodge all sorts of attacks, they can poison and burn their enemies, they can make hell for casters, they can cause mass damage... What the hell can't they do? And all that while having armour as good as a warrior's.

personally I think the female ranger has the best player model in the game but i guess it might be archers traditionaly have the best range attack without the weakness of spellcasters usually weak armor

but i would say its the pet

at one point they were the most powerful profession but that has since been changed. I actually started playing a ranger when I was ridiculed for doing so as they were so underpowered it was ridiculous. I've just always really enjoyed the concept of having a pet and attacking from the shadows.

When I started investigating the class further I just really liked the way they melded with a necro really nice for doing damage and disruption.

because they ROCK LOL!

I think the real reason is lot of people love Stealth games i.e. Thief , Splinter Cell . ect rangers can use Stealth. Also they can have cool pets. That means if you can't find somebady to play with you are still covered. Your pets lvl too so they can tank for you. Plus and this is just my Opinion but Rangers are one of the best for PvE and who doesn't Love PvE.

Plus they have a wicked cool dance

One of the funniest things about rangers is how they are ignored and underestimated. You can be sitting on the side lines of a battle slaughtering their entire team and they won't make the slightest attempt to subdue you. Of course, it can be a pain in the ass while looking for a decent Tombs team.

I love nature themed classes and being able to use a bow. It's good to attack decently from a distance and not have to rely on spells. They're a very well-rounded profession and can have a variety of styles to play with their skills. I just think they're one of the more diversified professions in the game right now which appeals to a lot of people who get worried that their second profession won't compliment their primary.

I don't think they're ignored, I think they're no more ignored than warriors. It just comes down to being more beneficial to take out healers, eles, mesmers, etc... than it is to take on the rangers first.

HAR HAR

That would be their mistake now wouldn't it?

Rangers are the most versatile out of all the classes, and yes the higher armor is a big help. Its a shame stealth never came to be, perhaps it will be used in some future day with another class. Oh well, expertise is wonderful.

I'm a big fan of sniping people, so just launching bolts in with my bow and taking people down is always a plus for me. That, and they look the coolest too; not stocky like the Warrior, but they don't look like pansies either.

Myself, I'll most likely be running a Ranger/Elementalist build for my main character once the game is released, using Traps of some sort (Mud Trap{E} comes to mind) in conjunction with AoE Elementalist spells to deal some massive damage, all while using a Energy gaining spell (i.e. Air/Earth/Fire/Water Attunement) and hitting everybody I can with Apply Poison. Not battle tested yet, and not even sure if it's possible to do (not sure what the limitations are on an Elementalist secondary), but it'd fit well with my playing style.

Well... bugger me, why wouldn't they be so popular?

Best Primary Attribute. Bar none. 5 more energy than Warrior and 1 more pip a second. Toss in Expertise and a Ranger can give the casters a run for their money, energy-wise. Ranger arguably sport the best armour in the game. Falls just behind Warrior armour for physical damage, gets ahead for elemental/fire damage. And what's this? Here come some rock solid stances and decent healing... Rangers can be bloody tough to take down. What've Warriors got? Healing Signet? Tactics? Oh, tits! We surrender! And while this isn't helpful for most builds, they have some meaty preperations that can be used on both bows and blades. Frankly, I don't think any other class comes close for utility. My only gripe is that female Rangers have always looked a tad... odd, ingame. Imagine twigs, but with stupid hair.

Oh, and Rangers don't have armour befitting a thief. Yet Mesmers do (just missing the cloak/scarf), and I feel that makes Ranger primary lose about fifteen points on my arbitrary "Cool Beans" scale.

I'd have to agree i think that armour has a huge part to play... and i've seen some wicked ranger/warrior build floating around too.

In reagrds to pets, I think next beta will show a huge shortage of pet-rangers due to the recent 5% death penalty that follows the death of your pet. Its way to frustrating in both low lvl pve and High Lvl pvp (then again I'd argue you should've be running a pet in that case... usually )

Probably the only thing unappealing about rangers right now. I don't like how they brought it back. I think it makes more sense to still have the death penalty on Nature Rituals and not on pets. Pets are already lacking in their effectiveness in groups.

As for Expertise being the best primary... I think that's just because the others suck so much. Expertise is heavily needed to be a good ranger. Other primaries aren't needed so much to be good at that profession. Just my opinion from playing all the professions and having a ranger primary.

is this just a ranger biased thread or are people forgetting about energy storage.

i mean ya expertise is nice but at the lower lvls its not as good. stick like 4 into e storage and uve got like 15 extra energy. i mean expertise cant get u solid energy and only effects soem things, so its onoly effective in situations, where e storage cant be efficient anywhere.

imsurprised elementalist was so far down on the list...

im looking to be a ranger because i come from WoW, where i was a Hunter. And eventhough they got the least amount of attention, and was probably the worst class in the game, i still thought it was pretty fun, so imma try it out again.

Energy Storage is such an iffy attribute. There's no denying it's worth, hey, you can start the fight with a crazy pool of energy. Bombs away! But once someone locks you down with energy denial, Energy Storage fast becomes the last attribute you want. Expertise is useful even if you do get denied your energy by some jumped-up twat in a suit, in fact, it's extremely useful if you're being forced to fight close to zero energy. What's Energy Storage going to do? Kiss your wounds better? Take you to the zoo? Grow up!
